What Is Browser Fingerprinting?
Browser fingerprinting is a sophisticated online tracking technique that identifies users by collecting detailed information about their browser and device configuration. Unlike cookies, which store a tracking identifier on your device, fingerprinting works by analyzing the unique combination of settings and capabilities your browser exposes to websites.
Every time you visit a website, your browser shares a wealth of technical information: your screen resolution, installed fonts, graphics card, timezone, language preferences, and much more. While each of these data points is shared by many users individually, the specific combination of all these signals together can be surprisingly unique — often enough to identify a single browser among millions.
Canvas fingerprinting is one of the most powerful techniques. By asking your browser to draw a hidden image, websites can detect subtle differences in how your graphics hardware and software render pixels. These differences are consistent across visits but vary between devices, creating a reliable identifier.
WebGL fingerprinting extends this further by probing your GPU capabilities, revealing the exact graphics card model and driver version. Audio fingerprinting analyzes how your device processes sound signals, adding yet another unique data point.
The challenge with fingerprinting is that it is nearly invisible and difficult to prevent. You cannot simply clear your fingerprint like you can clear cookies.
