Internet Speed Test

An internet speed test measures how fast data can travel between your device and a test server. It evaluates three critical aspects of your connection: download speed, upload speed, and latency (ping). Understanding these metrics is essential for diagnosing network issues, verifying that your internet service provider is delivering the speeds you pay for, and determining whether your connection is suitable for specific activities like video conferencing, gaming, or streaming.

Download speed measures how quickly your device can receive data from the internet. This is the metric that matters most for activities like streaming video, loading web pages, and downloading files. It is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Upload speed measures how quickly your device can send data to the internet, which is critical for video calls, live streaming, uploading files to cloud storage, and sending large email attachments. In most consumer internet plans, upload speed is significantly lower than download speed.

Ping (or latency) measures the round-trip time for a small packet of data to travel from your device to the server and back. Lower ping values mean more responsive connections, which is especially important for online gaming, video conferencing, and any application that requires real-time interaction. Jitter measures the variation in ping over time -- a connection with low jitter is more stable and consistent, even if the average ping is moderately high.

Several factors can influence your speed test results. Your Wi-Fi signal strength, the number of devices sharing your network, the time of day (peak hours often mean slower speeds due to network congestion), and the distance between you and the test server all play a role. For the most accurate results, we recommend running the test on a wired (Ethernet) connection, closing other bandwidth-intensive applications, and running the test multiple times at different times of day.
